“We should never feel too boxed or limited, we must fight.”

— Kay Ibrahim, Freelance Creative Director

ABOUT

Describe your job in a sentence?

Exciting, fresh and free flowing.

What has your career path been?

My career path started off with me doing it in school. Then entering and winning competitions. Retiring after being disheartened. Coming back into it and then maintaining a retail job for seven years until I was in the position I could explore my field with absolute confidence and the freedom I desired.

Why do you do your job?

My mother inspired me generally to explore the creative arts. She was always taking photos, and my father worked in radio. Through early experiences of exploring art, I knew it was something I would be able to do that would be truly fulfilling. I felt art was a great escape and a great tool for relatability and knowing oneself.

So that was also another inspiration. Another was showcasing to people from my working class background. That there were other opportunities for us no matter how distant they may feel. We should never feel too boxed or limited, we must fight.

One piece of advice for someone starting in your role?

One piece of advice I would give to anyone starting in my role is to spend a lot of time knowing yourself. Knowing what you like. Once you can do that it’s easier to manoeuvre through the career path with absolute faith and live in your process and what you do.

DAY IN THE LIFE

A day in the life for me varies as I expand myself over various places.

During the initial lockdown I used it as a period to explore my field and do a heavy selection of research.

So in the morning I’d wake up, brush my teeth and shower. Get ready and eat some cereal for breakfast, coupled with some tea.

I tend to do an hour of cleaning. Whether that was restructuring my home or gardening. During this time, I like to listen to some new music.

Soon after I read a book and then go into a few hours of tutorials on YouTube cantered around photography, graphic design and video. And watching movies for inspiration and research purposes.

Before going to bed which consists of me listening to YouTube videos centred around philosophy and anime/movie reviews/theories.

Post lockdown I have found myself in between London and Ascot.

I wake up. Brush my teeth , shower and eat breakfast. Followed by checking my emails and responding to them. I then tend to take a few calls which are UK based, centred around business.

After that period I tend to speak to Hassan Gazali. Co-Founder and head of Take More Photos, and these calls are normally centred around what we we will do to further our ambitions for the company.

On some days I will then go to the office and work, whilst helping manage the photo studios. However on most days I will meet up with Oliver Malcolm to sit down and devise creative strategies and create content cantered around what we will do for the brand going forward.

Around the evening I will then eat dinner. Followed by fielding a few calls with my clients based in America.

After that I will relax. And have loads of tea. And continue creating content, whether that’s photographic or graphic design based. Or if an up and coming project is on the horizon I will make treatments.

I tend to work on and off til 3am in the morning at which point I will begin to wind down. Shower. Get ready for bed, and listen to YouTube videos before falling asleep.
