“Never let the fear of failure stop you from trying.”

— Giovanna Mae, Freelance Music Publicist

ABOUT

Tell us who you are!

Hi my name is Giovanna Mae and I'm a freelance music publicist and all round stylish gyal!

So what do you actually do?

In a nutshell I'm the middle woman between an artist and press. I'm the person that sets up interviews and shoots in publications for some of your favourite artists.

What has your career path been?

This may sound so cliche but PR found me...I've always been heavily involved in the music industry as growing up a lot of my friends were artists, DJ's or producers. I ended up vlogging my day to day (which was always pretty cool) and started a blog interview artists and my friends.

I then somehow ended up at BBC 1xtra for a year or so helping out in the studio and learning the ropes as a presenter. I was one of those people that knew they wanted to be in the music industry but didn't know exactly where then one day a friend said I'd be good at PR, I went on to Uni to study the craft landed a few roles at Frank PR, W Communications, Polydor Records then decided label life wasn't for me. I then ended up at an independent Music PR agency which was great because I was able to work with both upcoming and established artists however after a while I got bored as I felt restricted and couldn't really work the way I wanted to so I made the jump and went freelance.

What is the best part of your job?

My favourite part about my job is being able to create a digital press footprint for upcoming artists as well as being someone that my clients can trust and be transparent with at all times when it comes to their music.

Also I can't forget shoots, I absolutely love going to shoots it's so amazing to be there in first person and see the creative process that goes into an editorial before seeing the final product in print or online.

Why do you do your job?

Because I love music, I've always loved music. I promise you as soon as I wake up I press play on Spotify, however it's also nice to be the person that's able to help an artist build their presence in the media.

One piece of advice for someone starting in your role?

Never let the fear of failure stop you from trying! Honestly that goes to any industry to be fair you just have to be true to yourself.

Final words?

Keep your eye out I may have a surprise for you guys really soon.

DAY IN THE LIFE

Every publicist will tell you this but every single day in the music PR world is completely different. However I'll give you a run through of how my day went today. I've been working across a few singles the past couple of weeks so the first thing I do when I wake up (after pressing play on Spotify, brushing my teeth and getting ready) is check my to do list. I stand by a to-do list by the way it really keeps me structured because sometimes I'm doing a thousand things at once.

I then went on to do my morning internet sweeps to see what coverage has gone live for the releases I'm working on. I gathered all bits of coverage and sent an update over to the artists mgmt/team to keep them updated on where the tracks have been placed; once that was sent over I had a little creative brainstorm. As I have a lot of friends that work across different industries in the world of PR I like to merge a little because if I feel as if I can tie a brand in with the artist i'm working with then I'm going to make it happen some way or another.

Today actually consisted of 3 zoom calls, one which wasn't actually scheduled in. I sat in the background of two interviews for two different artists just to oversee the interview process and make sure the questions were heading in the right direction (they both went really really well). The rest of the day consisted of sending and responding to emails, whatsapp group chats and a little bit of netflix. To wrap up the day I prepped my to-do list for the following day because structure is key!

Tomorrow will probably be completely different, I'm meant to be on set tomorrow so we'll see how that goes.
